In and Around OxfordDescribed as "The City of Dreaming Spires", due to the architecture of the university buildings, the town of Oxford was established back in the 9th century, although people have lived here for many thousands of years. Oxford was originally occupied in Saxon times and was known as Oxenaforda, (Ford of the Ox). Today, Oxford is a cosmopolitan City mixing the old with the new. Famous for its university, Oxford was the first university in the English speaking world. The university now has a student population of nearly 20,000, of which around 25% come from outside the United Kingdom. Oxford University has over 100 libraries with 11 million printed items. The Bodleian Library, which dates back to 1602, is the second largest library in the UK, after the British Library, with 118 miles of bookshelves. The Bodleian has recently received the largest single donation ever made to a university, £5m. This money will go towards the redevelopment of the New Bodleian Library in Oxford city centre, and on completion will enable the library to show its priceless collections to the public. |
