The Horse Trust, Princes Risborough, 01494 488464

The Horse Trust is the oldest horse charity in the world, dating back to 1886.  The Trust is located amongst the rolling Chiltern Hills and looks after over 100 retired horses, donkeys and ponies.  The Trust is open to visitors daily between 2-4pm.

Outdoor adventure ropes course with over 50 obstacles to overcome between 3-14m above ground.  Zip wires, mid-air platforms, climbing walls are just some of the challenges to overcome on this fun activity.  Suitable for anyone over 1.1 metres tall (around 6 years old).

Wendover Woods is 325 hectares of mixed coniferous and broadleaved woodland.  Located on the northern edge of the Chiltern escarpment this wood has spectacular views across the Aylesbury Vale.  For the energetic there is a large permanent orienteering course and a fitness trail. Orienteering maps can be collected during the week from the office or the Wendover Tourist Information Centre.  Other facilities include a children’s play area, toilets, barbeque stands, cycle routes and horse trails.  

 

Walks & Cycle Rides in the Chilterns, Chilterns,

Chiltern District Council have a page on their website dedicated to The Chiltern Heritage Walking & Cycle Trails.  There are many different cycle routes and walks to take linking historic towns and parishes with routes through popular tourist attractions and historic places of interest.  Walks range from just over one mile to eight.  The cycling routes are divided into three loops, each covering around 25 miles, designed with the whole family in mind.  To find out more click here.

Hell-Fire Caves, High Wycombe, Bucks, 01494 533739

The caves were extended in the 1740s, but it is thought they date back to ancient times.  The extension was organised by Sir Francis Dashwood as an addition to his landscaped gardens, and were dug by hand.  Pickaxe marks can be seen in the walls. The caves wind underground for over half a mile, going through the Great Banqueting Hall, past numerous chambers, eventually ending at the Inner Temple, by which point visitors are several hundred feet underground.

The World’s oldest model village, portraying rural life in the 1930s. Six villages in 1½ acres with farms, castles, churches, lakes, a fair, beaches, cottages and a zoo.  At weekends there is also a light miniature railway that runs through the village.

The Roald Dahl Children's Gallery, Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, 01296 331441

The Roald Dahl Children’s Gallery is part of Buckinghamshire County Museum.  Children can discover inventions with Willy Wonka, investigate mini-beasts inside the giant peach, crawl along Fantastic Mr Fox’s tunnel, see the Twits’ upside down room and explore sounds with the BFG.  The museum operates a timed ticket system, with each visit lasting one hour.  Entry is on the hour.
