Pub Restaurants in Sussex

Welldiggers Arms, Low Heath, nr Petworth, West Sussex, RH19, 01798 342287

The Welldiggers is a proper pub, rustic, no frills but with lots of character.  A small locals pub housed in a building that dates back 300 years, with carpet that might possibly not have been changed in all that time and mis-matching wooden furniture.  Although locals gather for a pint in the small standing area around the bar, this is primarily a food pub and what fabulous food they serve.  No gastro pub but instead a rugged building with low beamed ceilings and memorabilia on the walls.  The landlord has been at the pub for over 50 years and is a large personality, greeting visitors to the pub.  The bar manager appears serious in manner but you quickly realise what a good professional women she is and you really warm to her but you wouldn’t argue with her!  This is a great pub offering fantastic food, character and good service, but if you are eating make sure you book.

Halfway Bridge Inn, Halfway Bridge, Lodsworth, Petworth, Sussex GU28, 01798 861281

The Halfway Bridge Inn is a great food pub that also welcomes drinkers!  This small 17th century pub has several interconnecting rooms adding to the charm of the place, with a modern very stylish country cosy feel to it.  Eat at solid wooden tables with a mixture of comfortable wooden seats, benches and leather chairs. While the Halfway Bridge has a good reputation for food, locals can be seen popping in for a drink at the bar, with stalls to accommodate!  The food is fabulous and the service very good, and particularly friendly.  The rooms are in a separate barn conversion across the road from the pub offering excellent  charming modern lodgings overlooking a private lawn.
Royal Oak, East Lavant, 01243 527434

Georgian pub located within the quiet village of East Lavant.  Rustic feel, good food and well appointed accommodation spread across the inn, cottages and barn.  During the summer months sit outside the front of the pub or on the terrace at the rear of the pub.
The Three Horseshoes, Elsted, Midhurst, Sussex GU29, 01730 825746

Country pub housed in a building dating back to the 16th century. Traditional features such as latched doors, low beamed bar and log fires. Reputation for a well kept pretty garden with stunning views over the countryside and hearty British food.

The Jolly Sportsman, East Chiltington, Sussex, 01273 890400

Tucked away on a quiet lane this modern, yet rustic pub/restaurant is informal and relaxed.  Sit in the bar beside the pub’s open fire, or on warmer days sit outside in the restful garden.  During the summer months sit on the terrace with the Moroccan tiled tables.  Chic pub in rural setting serving good food.

The Cat Inn, West Hoathly, East Grinstead, Sussex, 01342 810369

A very nice 16th century country pub located in a beautiful village opposite the 15th century village church, and popular with walkers.  The Cat Inn is everything you would like a local to be, with wood panelled walls, a large inglenook fireplace, wooden beams, cosy bar area and plenty of seating in different coves off the bar. The open plan eating area is located at the back of the pub and serves good quality food, with traditional Sunday lunches.  The restaurant, with its large floor to ceiling windows leads out to a  terrace with modern wooden furniture and parasols, where people can eat or drink.  There are also four rooms offering accommodation. Children under 8 are not allowed in the pub but are very welcome in the beer garden.

Crab & Lobster, Mill Hamlet Cottage Mill Lane, Sidlesham, Chichester, West Sussex PO20, 01243 641233

Situated on the banks of the Pagham Harbour Nature Reserve, the Crab & Lobster is an idealic setting for a lazy lunch followed by a gentle walk.  Housed in a 16th-century inn, although now more of a restaurant however, there is a separate flagstoned bar area with seating and a small fireplace where visitors can enjoy a drink - and  you are made to feel very welcome! A classy feel with stylish, rustic, comfy interior, wooden tables to eat and comfortable leather chairs.  During the summer months visitors can eat out on the terrace overlooking the harbour.  The Crab & Lobster has a good reputation for food and very nice accommodation.
