Splendid 18th-century English interiors in an idyllic country setting:

  • Georgian country house, with fine Chinoiserie and rococo decorations
  • Intricate wood carvings and spectacular parquetry staircase
  • Mementoes of Florence Nightingale, who was once a regular visitor

Home of the Verney family for more than 400 years, the extraordinary interiors of Claydon House, built 1759-69, represent a veritable three-dimensional pattern book of 18th-century decorative styles. Outstanding features include the astonishingly lavish wood carving in the Chinese Room and the fine parquetry grand staircase. Claydon has strong associations with Florence Nightingale, who was sister-in-law to Sir Harry Verney. She was a regular visitor to the house, which contains many of her personal belongings. Claydon House is set within 21 hectares (52 acres) of unspoilt parkland with far-reaching views and lakeside walks. The courtyard contains small workshops and galleries, as well as a popular restaurant and tea-room (not NT). The private gardens are open to visitors at an additional charge (inc. NT members).
