Highclere Castle, Newbury, Berkshire, RG20, 01635 253210

Stunning Victorian mansion dating back hundreds of years and transformed to its current Victorian splendour late in the 19th century.  Vast mansion, in which the present Lord and Lady Carnarvon still live.  The castle is the location where Downton Abbey was filmed for ITV. Beautiful gardens, and a library housing 5,500 books are also on view.

May 26th and 27th The Highclere Game and Country Fair. Now in its 16th year, the Highclere Game and Country Fair provides a fun and interesting showcase of country life. Whether you’re here to compete in the World’s most prestigious field sports competitions for the biggest prizes available, or just relax and enjoy the fabulous surroundings, there’s something to suit all tastes, whether it is world-class championship events in clay shooting, or watching gundogs, falconers or horses. There are over 100 retailers and if you are new to country sports, you will find expert tuition and advice on how to get involved in some of the most enjoyable and rewarding pastimes. It is also a great family day out, and offers something for everyone.

Plenty of activities for the whole family in this 350 acre park, including a 9-hole crazy golf course, adventure playgrounds, lakeside walks, nature trails and a miniature railway

Californian Country Park, Finchampstead, 0118 934 2016

Country park set within 100 acres of rare ancient bogland and lowland heath.  For children there are play areas, a paddling pool and a painting studio.  Walks include one of just under a mile, the other of just over two miles.  A 6 acre course fishing lake offers day permits.

The River Thames, at 215 miles (346km), is the second largest river in England stretching from its source in Kemble, Gloucestershire to the Thames Barrier in London. The Thames flows through the counties of Gloucestershire, Oxfordshire, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Surrey before reaching London, has 45 locks and has a towpath that runs from the beginning to end! The Thames Path is a designated public footpath and there maybe restrictions for cyclists, as this is not a cycle route. The Thames passes through many historical towns and picturesque villages, and has much to offer both walkers and the boating fraternity with festivals, boat races, rallies and regattas, riverside pubs, restaurants, wildlife and glorious scenery.

Part of the Crown Estate, Windsor Great Park is set in 2,020 hectares (5,000 acres) of the Surrey and Berkshire countryside stretching from Windsor Castle to  Ascot to the south, attracting over two million visitors annually.  The Royal Landscape is a thousand acres of landscaped gardens, lakes and woodland, incorporating The Savill Garden, The Valley Gardens and Virginia Water lake. The Park has a varied landscape, sweeping deer lawns, woods, coverts, huge ancient oak trees, and an assorted wildlife.
