Buckinghamshire Railway Centre, Quainton, Buckinghamshire, 01296 655720

Covering nearly 30 acres, the Buckinghamshire Railway Centre is one of the leading steam museums in England. Thirty steam locomotives and a collection of carriages and wagons, one of which dates back to 1901 and was later used as a mobile meeting room by Winston Churchill. Open air museum set in 45 acres of woods and parkland, housing over 30 historic buildings that have been rescued from destruction, dismantled and rebuilt. Visitors can learn about the methods and materials used to originally build these historical properties and participate in hands-on activities.

Bletchley Park Museum, Milton Keynes, 01908 640404

Bletchley was built in the late 19th century as a family home. In 1938 the Government took over the property and housed the Government Code and Cypher School here, away from London and potential enemy air attacks. The code breakers arrived in 1939. Today, see the Enigma Machines, including the rare 'Abwehr G312', discover the tales of spies and strategic deception, and look at the exhibitions.

Museum tracing the history of the district with hands-on activities and regular changing exhibitions. The museum displays information on social history, the furniture industry, art, archives of material and photographs, and history tapes.
Hell-Fire Caves, High Wycombe, Bucks, 01494 533739

The caves were extended in the 1740s, but it is thought they date back to ancient times.  The extension was organised by Sir Francis Dashwood as an addition to his landscaped gardens, and were dug by hand.  Pickaxe marks can be seen in the walls. The caves wind underground for over half a mile, going through the Great Banqueting Hall, past numerous chambers, eventually ending at the Inner Temple, by which point visitors are several hundred feet underground.

The Roald Dahl Children’s Gallery is part of Buckinghamshire County Museum.  Children can discover inventions with Willy Wonka, investigate mini-beasts inside the giant peach, crawl along Fantastic Mr Fox’s tunnel, see the Twits’ upside down room and explore sounds with the BFG.  The museum operates a timed ticket system, with each visit lasting one hour.  Entry is on the hour.
