A beautiful creation of the 18th century, Stowe is one of Europe's foremost landscape gardens. Nestling among spectacular vistas and vast open spaces are more than 40 monuments and temples, each with its own special significance. Stowe is the perfect setting for a family picnic or for those seeking peace and tranquillity, with walks and trails for all to enjoy. With the changing seasons, continuing restoration and a calendar of events for all the family, each visit provides something new. Visitors can also take a tour of Stowe House (not NT) or explore the 300 hectares (750 acres) of surrounding historic parkland.
House (not NT), charge including NT members. Visitors to the gardens should allow plenty of time because of the extensive areas. Stowe House is used by Stowe School and opened to the public by Stowe House Preservation Trust. Telephone 01280 818166 for details or visit www.shpt.org for opening times.
