Royal Windsor Racecourse
Set within 165 acres on a fabulous island setting on the banks of the River Thames, within sight of Windsor Castle, Royal Windsor Racecourse offers a warm welcome from the minute you arrive, a wonderful atmosphere and superb hospitality!
Heritage & Happenings
Experience the unique blend of royal heritage and intimate atmosphere that is Royal Windsor Racecourse. Over the years, Windsor Racecourse has played host to many exciting and successful events - their famous summertime Monday night racing is just one of them!
Although the local area has links to horse racing dating back to the era of Henry VIII, the first race meeting at Royal Windsor was not held until 1866. Of course, Royal patronage is no surprise, horse racing is, after all, 'the sport of Kings' (and Queen's) and Windsor Racecourse is very privileged to have such a high profile and enthusiastic next-door-neighbour!
The People's Racecourse
Royal Windsor Racecourse is the people's racecourse too. In 1926, when bookmakers refused bets in response to Winston Churchill's imposition of a betting tax, the new levy was quickly abolished... Some 23 years later, neither Windsor nor Winston held a grudge, judging by the rapturous reception in 1949 when Churchill came to watch his indomitable grey, Colonist II, gallop to victory in the Lime Tree Stakes.
Countless well-known faces have visited Royal Windsor Racecourse over the years, for both business and pleasure. Each season sees many celebrities attending glamorous fund raising events. These sumptuous charity dinners are held in the Riverbank Pavilion and guests are renowned for their generosity when bidding in the after dinner auctions.
Monday Evening Racing!
And now Windsor Racecourse's fashionable summertime Monday night race meetings are becoming star-studded occasions too. Attended by many sporting, pop and television celebrities, Pimms and champagne are the order of the day and the Paddock Lawn with its romantic river frontage and stunning castle view becomes a massive garden party.
